Then Jesus said to the disciples, "Have faith in God.” Mark 11:22
Jesus’s words in Mark 11:22—“Have faith in God”—are a simple yet profound command that invites us to examine the foundation of our trust. In these four powerful words, Jesus directs our hearts away from self-reliance, fear, and doubt, and toward the One who is utterly dependable and unchanging.
This teaching comes right after Jesus curses the fig tree and it withers—a moment that leaves the disciples astonished. Jesus uses this opportunity to teach them a vital spiritual principle: faith in God is the key to seeing the impossible become possible. But it's not the power of faith itself. It's the power of the One in whom the faith is placed.
What Does It Mean to Have Faith in God?
1. Trust in His Character:
Having faith in God means trusting in His character. He is faithful, good, loving, and all-powerful. The Lord never changes, and His promises are sure. Faith begins with knowing who God is and believing that He is able to accomplish His purposes in our lives.
2. Reliance on His Power:
Faith calls us to depend not on our own strength or understanding but on God’s limitless power. As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”
3. Obedience to His Word:
True faith manifests in obedience. When we believe God’s Word, we align our thoughts and actions with His truth. Faith isn’t passive; it’s active, shaping how we live and respond to life’s challenges.
How Does the Word Tell Us to Build Up Our Faith?
Building up our faith requires a deliberate decision and intent on our part. It will not happen automatically or by osmosis! We have to do something!!! The Bible is very clear about this.
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17
So, if faith comes by hearing the Word, we ought to make hearing the Word a priority in our lives. And not just hearing it, but meditating on it until we get it down into our hearts.
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Jude 1:20
Praying in the Spirit means you are praying in the spirit realm by the power of the Holy Spirit. It's when you allow Holy Spirit to use your mouth and pray for you. Why?
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself. 1 Corinthians 14:4
When you edify or build up your spirit man, you increase your capacity for and strengthen your faith.
Prayer
Father, our Lord Jesus has given us the key to seeing the impossible done in our lives. Those 4 simple words (Have Faith In God) have the power to change our lives!!! But only if we act on them. Give us the courage to take the steps necessary to cultivate faith in ourselves. The kind of faith that will trust in the Who that You are and the promises that You have given us in Your Word. The kind of faith that depends on Your limitless power and not on our own strength. The kind of faith that manifests in obedience. The kind of faith that will move mountains! The kind of faith that pleases You!!!
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6
